January Toddler Activity

Updated: Feb 4

Once a teacher, always a teacher! If I was still teaching, I would be getting ready for January's theme. In elementary, January was centered around Arctic animals, winter, snow, etc. Liam has been recently loving anything animals so I searched online for simple books about Arctic animals. It seemed like every book I found online was for older kids and none were appropriate for young toddlers so in teacher fashion I created one! It's simple and to the point. It has real life pictures of the animals too!

At the end of the book there are 3 types of simple questions to ask your child. It starts off easy and gets more challenging. My target for the book are ages 1-5.

For the questions, ages 1-3 can focus on matching the animals. This part will require Velcro dots to match the animals. Ask your toddler,"can you find the other polar bear? Here you go, show me" and hand over the piece for them to match. Pause and allow time for them to process the question before you ask again.

The next set of closed ended questions are toddlers who understand and can answer "yes" and "no" questions. Read the question to your toddler like this, "Is this a polar bear? Yes or No". Point to the check mark and x when saying yes or no while shaking your head up and down for yes and side to side for no. Pause and allow time to think before asking again. Besides understanding yes and no, they have to identity the animals.

The last set of questions are also closed ended but they are multiple choice. These are targeted for ages 3-5!

Spanish Version

Because I was a teacher, I have all of these items already but you don't need it! You can go online to Staples and have them print and laminate them for you. I believe they can also hole punch or bind it for you, but it may be cheaper to hole punch it yourself and add a binder ring! You can use those items again for next months book. My plan is create more themed books similar to this each month!

Directions:

  1. Print and laminate book. You can do this online at Staples if you don't have a printer or laminating machine. You can also use self adhesive laminating sheets! I did not print on the front/back on the pages. Just front! Print on card stock paper for more durability.

  2. Each page has two pages of the book. Cut pages in half.

3. Hole punch on the top left corner and add a ring. You can bind it if you have the machine.

4. Cut the matching pieces and add the Velcro dots behind those pieces and to the pictures on the page. I also added Velcro dots to the back of the page before to keep track of the pieces!
